Abstract

The article highlights the problem of sign language translators associated with a lack of knowledge of the Deaf culture. International documents are mentioned, which state the right to the cultural identity of the Deaf. The concept of “Deaf” is highlighted, with an emphasis on personality. The essence of the concept of “culture” that are relevant to the concept of “culture of the Deaf” is revealed. The focus is on the features of the Deaf cultural identity. Attention is drawn to the role of sign language and it is characterized as a powerful means of communication. Fluent sign language is different from sign language. It is emphasized that the sign language translator must follow certain rules for attracting the attention of a deaf interlocutor and for maintaining a conversation. The importance of the sign name that exists in the Deaf community, besides the official one, is emphasized. His presence means being a full member of the Deaf team. The factor of the Deaf's positive attitude to his own deafness is emphasized. The associations of the Deaf are highlighted and listed as a sign of culture; the presence of associations serves as a comfortable stay for native speakers of sign language. The associations of sign language interpreters are mentioned, which also indicates that they belong to the Deaf cultural and linguistic identity. Attention is drawn to endogamous marriages in the deaf community and the presence of a union between deaf persons and sign language translators is emphasized. The essence of cultural self-identification and the importance for the deaf person to emphasize their status are emphasized. The content of the rules and norms of behavior, the observance of which indicates belonging to the world of the Deaf, is disclosed. In particular, the need for lighting the place; the immediate meeting place of the Deaf; compliance with the rules of conversation and the inadmissibility of breaking it. The tendency of the deaf persons to detail the information and to say goodbye for a long time is indicated, which indicates the need for the Deaf in communication. There is a mention of the existence in the culture of the deaf folklore and art, which include gesture songs, theatrical performances, exhibitions of deaf artists, specific competitions, stories of storytellers, etc., which enriches the cultural and linguistic identity of the Deaf.
