Abstract

The article substantiates the importance of studying the special technology of teaching English to children with hearing impairment in the context of the specific requirements for the language competences of such students, which require reading and writing only. The article describes the specifics of the difficulties that cause of the role of the hearing impairment in the process of forming the ability to read, in particular, the problem of forming the sound-letter connection because of the impairment of the mechanism of pronunciation the English letters. The inability to hear some sounds makes it difficult or impossible for children with hearing impairments to reproduce these sounds, as well as the self-test of their own pronunciation through hearing. According to the results of theoretical analysis, this article was identified the strategies of solving the problem of pronunciation: audio-vocal; Cued Speech; fingerspelling; Manually Code Systems; Sign Language. The Audio-Vocal Strategy is based on the use of hearing residues and the formation of the correct pronunciation of the language sounds. A Fingerspelling Strategy involves fingerspelling the words, that at the initial stage of language learning helps to replace the sound, but after automation of the skill – slows down reading technique. The Cued Speech Strategy involves pronunciation the word syllables through the use of a manual articulation system that provides visual perception of oral speech sounds thought the combination four types signals (articulation, handshape, hand location and hand movement). The Manually Code Systems Strategy is based on the application of different variants of MCS for English such as Signing Essential English, Seeing Essential English, Signing Exact English, Signed English. The Sign Language Strategy is based on «pronunciation» by translating from English to Sign Language.
