Abstract

The article outlines a model of the empirical research on educational actors’ attitudes with regard to interaction practices in the educational environment favorable for citizenship competence development. It also presents the outcomes of the student survey data analysis. The study is based on the assumption that citizenship competence develops under the influence of youth everyday interaction practices in the educational community where the environment for promoting their citizenship competence development is created. The key characteristics of interaction practices in the educational environment that facilitates citizenship competence development are democratic communication, social responsibility, respect and interest to differences, seeking win-win solutions in conflict situations. The findings of the survey prove that the semantic environment representing interaction in the educational environment in the student attitudes is structured by the meanings of conflicts of interests and win-win solutions in conflict situations. The respondents link the prospects of citizenship competence development to interaction with people who represent difference social, age and ethnic groups, and have different opinions; with acquiring new knowledge and discovering new perspectives; with attachment to the educational community. The effectiveness of such triggers of competence development as “giving back” to the group, approval and positive evaluation by other students and teachers, engagement in self-government is low according to the students. Virtualization of the educational environment, as said by the respondents, in general has no threats to citizenship competence development. However, it has mainly negative consequences for such factors of citizenship competence development as engagement in student self-government and maintenance of social contacts.
