Abstract

The article outlines didactic and developmental potential of independent work of elementary school students in the process of learning a foreign language on competence basis, substantiates the principles and means of forming students' subject and key competences through the organization of independent work. It is emphasized that in the aspect of the current competence approach, independent work is a system of interaction between the subjects of the educational process, aimed at motivated involvement of students in the independent formation of subject and key competences, as well as the ability to independently find, process, apply information for teaching and learning as well as the development of such important for modern man qualities as the ability to self-organization, self-regulation, self-control. The principles of organization of independent work of elementary school students in the process of learning a foreign language on the competence basis, which include the principle of amateur activity, the principle of self-organization, the principle of development, are substantiated. The teacher should take into account the fact that elementary students have not yet formed an educational activity, so set a learning task, determine the progress of its implementation, monitor this process and evaluate the outcome appropriate to the teacher, gradually transferring some of these functions to students, which will allow them to further self-determined tasks. It is found that communication with foreign languages is at the same time a substantive and key competence that is formed in the lessons of foreign languages. That is why all kinds of independent work of students, all types of tasks make it possible to form it. It is established that the primary means of organizing the independent work of elementary school students is a textbook, a printed notebook, dictionaries, computer programs and more. A notebook with a printed base is an additional foreign language study guide, structured according to the content of the program and the current textbook.
