Abstract

The article highlights the psychological aspects of addiction development. Addiction is preceded by the formation of psychological readiness to use psychotropic substances. Individuals develop characteristics that are a kind of "weak link" in their socialization that provoke the escape from the reality in difficult situations. Psychological readiness to use psychotropic substances that develops gradually, may be quickly realized in an appropriate situation. This readiness starts in childhood and is fully shaped in adolescence. In our comparative study on maladjusted adolescents who use and those who do not use psychotropic substances we identified key personality traits responsible for addiction development. The individuals who are most likely to develop substance addiction lack achievement motivation (preference instead of avoiding motivation), consider themselves as stakeholders, lack pro-social values, are unable of predicting the consequences of their behavior, have poor self-control, underdeveloped reflection skills, external locus of control and low self-esteem, are prone to frustration manifested in passiveness in difficult situations, are self-contradictory and have low levels of aspiration manifested in illogical and inconsistent behaviors in difficult situations.
