Abstract
Ranking-age dependence and country-continental distribution of top institutions of higher education, which are over 500 and less than 50 years old, are investigated. It is shown that according to the “Shanghai” and “Times” rankings numerically prevail young (less than 50 years old) institutions comparing with the oldest ones (over 500 years old). However, second ones overall hold higher ranking positions that the first. In addition, for institutions aged less than 50 years old begins to show a positive ranking-age dependence, which especially is characteristic to institutions between 50 to 500 years old (which are three quarters), but appreciably fails to the institutions over 500 years old. Quantity of countries and continents with young institutions is much higher than country-continental parameter if the institutions are over 500 years old. The oldest institutions are exclusively classical (general), among young ones – from 21 to 33 percent are specialized institutions.
