Abstract

The issue of the diagnostics of emotional sphere in preschoolers with mental retardation has been investigated. The relevance of this topic is justified by the fact that the social conditions, in which the child lives, is brought up and acquires practical experience, is crucial for the development of the emotional sphere. In this respect, the issue of the psychological support of socially deprived preschoolers with mental retardation, who are brought up at orphanages, asylums, and residential care facilities, becomes of utmost importance. The effectiveness of these activities depends on the results of the diagnostics of emotional disorders in this population of children. A short theoretical analysis was performed to review studies conducted by Ukrainian and foreign psychologists and educators concerning emotions and emotional development, and features of the emotional development of preschoolers with mental retardation. It has been noted that the subject matter of the emotional diagnostics is determined by its contents, which can be differentiated by various criteria (parameters) according to the scientific and theoretical approaches to psychodiagnostics, such as action-based, psychodynamic, and behavioral approaches. The features of the psychological diagnostics of preschoolers with mental retardation have been identified: they encompass the selection of adequate psychodiagnostic measures, adaptation of stimuli, interpretation procedure and interpretation criteria. The emotional diagnostics in children is partial, although it does not differ from general pediatric psychodiagnostics and is done using common methods. A range of subjective and projective methods contributes to the investigation of the emotional sphere in preschoolers both by way of children’s performing diagnostic tasks, and by way of educators’ assessment.
