Abstract

The thesis presents a new approach to solving the problem of multicultural education of school students in the system of activities of the general educational institution, which consists in substantiating theoretical and methodological principles of formation of school students’ multicultural competence, working out and verifying experimentally the structural-functional model and methodological support of this process. The theoretical and methodological principles of multicultural education as a pedagogical problem have been substantiated by way of analyzing scientific sources. The content of multicultural education is clarified as a complex pedagogical process that takes into consideration all cultural and social differences of the educational environment subjects and is aimed at forming a competent personality who is knowledgeable in his/her own and other cultures, has value convictions determining tolerant attitude to them, and has an experience of positive interaction with representatives of various cultures on the basis of mutual understanding. Trough studying the experience and analyzing the legislative basis of foreign countries, the state of multicultural education in these countries has been defined in comparison with the national practice. The system of activities of secondary schools in the context of multicultural education has been characterized. The structure of multicultural competence of school students has been distinguished as a result of the process of multicultural education in the unity of cultural and cognitive, tolerant and value, and communicative and behavioural components. The types of multicultural competence have been defined: the competence of interethnic/interracial interaction, the competence of interreligious/interconfessional interaction, the competence of interregional integration, the competence of interaction between the population strata. The criteria (cultural and cognitive, tolerant and value, communicative and behavioral) and the relevant indices of multicultural competence have been determined. The structural-functional model of multicultural education of school students in the system of secondary school activities has been substantiated. The methods of multicultural education have been worked out and the peculiarities of introducing it depending on the type of educational environments have been described.
