Abstract

A survey of the children of different age groups living in the military conflict buffer zone in the east of Ukraine allowed identifying socio-psychological factors, which they perceive as the biggest stressors. Common factors for all the children turned out to be family quarrels and the fear of war. Age peculiarities of the perception of stressors have also been identified. For the 9-11-year-old children the most significant factor is parents’ shortage of time to communicate with them and the fear of parent violence. At the age of 12-14 those factors are parent irritation and quarrels with children, as well as the fear for the life of their family members. Children aged 15–17 named their parents alcohol addiction and lack of conditions for cultural development. The key informants (respondents especially chosen among the expert who provide psychological and socio-psychological support to children) determined financial instability, lack of understanding of parents, drunkenness, adultery and divorces stressors. Among the activities enhancing children stress resilience the authors consider the following: in-service training of specialists; creation of the supervision groups for them and conducting of the intervision sessions; consideration of age and psychological characteristics of children and their families. In the process of working with children, one should also take into account peculiarities of the fear of military men and weapons experienced by children, as well as the fear for their own lives and the lives of their parents.
