Abstract

The paper is devoted to analyses of phenomenon of university rankings as an alternative mechanism of educational measuring, which became popular and influential during last two decades. The author argued that in comparison with other mechanisms of quality assurance in university education (f. e. accreditation), rankings are much more dynamic, transparent and sensitive to the expectations of main target audiences in this area. Although rankings are oriented on more measurable dimensions of university activities (f. e. research performance), during last years we have numerous attempts to measure teaching effectiveness and learning outcomes.
