Abstract

The thesis is devoted to the development of psycho-pedagogical foundations of foreign language competence of future seafarers. The theoretical analysis of the above problems from the perspective of educational psychology is described in the thesis; the author determined the content and structure, characteristics and indicators of formation of foreign language competence of seafarers; researched foreign experience in training of seafarers for international fleet. The author gives the definition of foreign language competence of a seafarer as an integrative property of the individual to realize ability to conduct rational communication in the performance of functional responsibilities and use successfully interpersonal communication strategies to ensure the security of international navigation and own safety by means of the language of international communication. Psycholinguistic factor in forming the Content aspect of procedure component is a psycholinguistic perception of speech. At the psycholinguistic level quality characteristics of oral transmission of information, transmission of information associated with emotional and intellectual spheres require improvement and correction, development of attention and focus on speech perception and concentration while hearing, the voice control skills and general and foreign language anxiety need further correction too. Factor in forming intercultural dimension of the Content aspect of procedure component is the construction of cultural interaction scenarios. At the intercultural level students tended to stereotypes; revealed susceptibility to competition, ability to compromise, an attempt to avoid controversy, but willingness to flexibility, willingness to cooperate, tolerance in relation to specific nationalities, formation of skills of unbiased comparative study of values and abilities to build consciously scenarios of cultural interaction needed urgent correction. Factor in forming the strategical Content aspect of procedure component is to build communication strategies. At the strategic level future seafarers exhibited the proper level of the skill to recognize the difficulty of communication in the process of shipboard training, but the ability to choose a strategy to overcome the difficulties of communication needed correction. Factor in forming the cognitive aspect of the Content-procedural component of foreign language competence is thinking of a future seafarer aimed at preventing risks of navigation. Thus, the cognitive level revealed that the experience of shipboard training reduced the willingness to take risks, formed adequate assessment of feasibility and moderation in risk judgment when dealing with the international crews. Factor of forming the Motivational component of foreign language competence of future seafarers is the desire to communicate. The researched showed the proper level of communication skills but the ability to organize communication was behind the level of communication skills. Although in general all surveyed revealed a high level of communication skills, it should be noted that during shipboard training in international crews students felt lack of knowledge of foreign language for effective daily communication, they didn’t have desire to communicate due to fatigue, exhibited inability to communicate in a stressful situation. Factor in forming Socio- moral component of foreign language competence of future seafarers was the observance of moral behavior. The research of morality indicators revealed that the students exhibited the average level of positive aggression; twice exceeded level of negative aggression required correction; all components of empathy were quite developed, but special attention should be given to the attitude towards elderly people, especially in the concept of «inter- generational rank communication». Analysis of difficulties of seafarers’ foreign language communication allowed to create psychotechnologies as a psychological support for the formation of foreign language competence of future seafarers in the process of shipboard training and mastering English in maritime educational establishments. Developed and experimentally tested psychotechnologies will contribute to optimization of the the process of the English language teaching and can be used by the future seafarers during their shipboard training in international crews. The hypothesis that the formation of foreign language competence of future seafarers is based on the formation of its structural components and factors of its formation has found full confirmation in the empirical research
