Abstract

The dynamics of public support for national independence and integrity of the Ukrainian state determined on the basis of the findingd of the NAPS ISPP nationwide representative surveys has been analyzed. According to the outcomes of the monitoring research ambivalence of public opinion and fluctuations in numbers of supporters of Ukraine's independence have been traced. Emotional lift caused by the dramatic foreign and domestic situation in Ukraine at the intersection of 2013 and 2014-2015 hase been empirically recorded. It is stated that radical changes of the public sentiment as a manifestation of "situational modernity" not reduced the ambivalent attitude of Ukrainians to the state sovereignty and independence of the Ukrainian state, which is traditionally inherent for Ukrainians, but rather violated a symbolic "border" within the society, which runs through values and ideological orientations hindering formation of the Ukrainian political nation. The observed growth of patriotism and increased significance of national values as well as state sovereigntyl, which are currently consolidating Ukrainian citizens, challenge the thesis that the national values and the Ukrainian national consciousness have not been formed.
