Abstract

The article deals with the problem of adult education in the context of lifelong learning, the development of which is due to the need to refresh the specialists’ knowledge, training, learning new activities and technologies that connected with the accelerated information growth in the society. The modern views on the forms, types, trends of the lifelong education are presented. Three forms of the lifelong education are defined, namely formal, non-formal and informal; the main types such as elite, mass, social (inclusive) and additional educations are considered. The lifelong education’s principal functions (developmental, adaptive, integrative, compensative etc) and discussion points are noted in the paper. The social functions of the adult education as well as its great economic potential are highlighted. There have been revealed two contemporary scientific pedagogical approaches to the lifelong education development: the first one is based on the human capital concept, vocational skills and training development; the second approach supporters insist on the cognitive, emotional and communicative competencies development. The role of adult education in achieving the progress of the individual and society connected with the prior purpose of adult education is to provide knowledge and skills necessary for active creative life, lifelong development of a person as worker, citizen, and individual.
