This article unveils the essence of integration in the theory of pedagogy and highlights its philosophical, culturological and psychological foundations. Cultural and aesthetic universals and the polymodal essence of the human psyche are claimed to be imperative for integrated pedagogical processes. Attention is also paid to the role of imaginative associations, synaesthesia, emotional intelligence and syncretism of children’s thinking and of their artistic creativity. The author’s conception of polycentric integration of the content of general art education is corroborated. This conception has become the scholarly basis not only for designing the content and structure of the integrated course “Art” at Ukrainian primary and secondary schools, but also for a series of textbooks for pupils from the first to the eleventh school year. In addition, the article provides a classification of the kinds of integration, integration mechanisms and forms of the synthesis of arts. Moreover, the leading integrators of the content of the course “Art” are outlined in the context of primary, basic and high vocational education. These integrators predetermine the didactic structure and thematic composition of the course in question. Finally, some features of the application of the author’s conceptual ideas at primary school are examined in light of the strategies and requirements of the New Ukrainian School.
