Abstract

In the article, the main tendencies of the development of the foreign languages education in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland are considered; moreover, the factors that predetermined that or another changes in the foreign languages policy of this state are determined. They included the implementation of the updated educational programs, standards, the requirements to the teachers’ work, the integrated approach to teaching, etc. Besides, their positive influence on the promotion of the increase of the competence level of the British graduates was proved; the statistical data which demonstrate the positive tendencies in the development of the process of the formation of the foreign languages communicative skills of schoolchildren at different stages of learning foreign languages was represented. Taking into consideration the fact that the development of the British foreign languages education can not be considered simultaneous and linear because of the division of this country in different parts (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), each of them is peculiar for the adoption of their own legislative documents, the author of the article defines the peculiarities of the development of the foreign languages education separately and demonstrates certain similarities and differences that are peculiar for teaching foreign languages in each of them. Besides, in the article, the aims that are set by the British foreign languages education as well as the innovations which were implemented are determined. These changes had a considerable impact on the integrated teaching approaches which assures not only the communicative skills improvement but also promotes obtaining practical knowledge by pupils in other subjects. The assessment of the pupils’ academic achievements became innovative, as well. The author of the article provides a modern scheme of such assessment which is actively used by the pedagogues in the process of teaching pupils at schools and promotes the accurateness of their academic results.
