Abstract
The article deals with the process of establishing and development of the con-tent of military and patriotic education in pedagogical literature. With this aim, the main works on military and patriotic education are defined and analyzed, in which the authors reveal the content and essence of this notion, and provide its definition. The article demonstrates that the correct definition of the content and essence of military and patriotic education influences the development of theory and methods of this education, and strengthens its connections with practice, the search for effective forms and means of training youth to military service. The correct understanding of the essence and content of this concept is also proved to stipulate the efficiency of military and patriotic work in secondary schools, help teachers of the subject «Defense of Homeland» to overcome difficulties in impor-tant spheres of their practice activity. Among such spheres: formation of positive attitude of senior students to military service, education of high patriotic quali-ties, realization of an individual approach to military and patriotic education of pre-conscript youth in the process of education, out-of-class and out-of-school mass defensive and sport activities.
