Abstract

The paper deals with various aspects and factors of human happiness. Happiness is an integrative state and can be caused by many factors. Various factors can increase person's feeling of happiness or, vice versa, diminish it, but they are not able to deprive him/her completely of that feeling. It should be noted that, in general, people are biologically more focused on experiencing negative emotions. The subcortical structures of the brain, responsible for anger and anxiety, are phylogenetically more ancient than those responsible for positive emotions. But people are able to influence their own level of happiness by developing the ability to reduce anxiety by distracting themselves from it and directing their own cognitive attitudes towards optimism and rationality. There are also specific activities which can reduce and prevent depression and just bring joy. Among these activities communication and interpersonal relationships (friendship, love and family life) are especially important and should be considered to be the main sources of happiness. But if a person is not capable of social interaction or this interaction is impossible for him/her because of the shortcomings of the society and its institutions, this is not a cause for despair. There are ways to increase happiness without explicit social activity. For example, a variety of spiritual practices increases the level of happiness. One of the most important conditions for happiness is the availability of a certain purpose. It is desirable that this purpose is more or less complex, so it is possible to divide it into smaller targets with some specific criteria which determine the level of approaching the main purpose. It is also good if this purpose originates in some sublime philosophical category and carries some sublime meanings.
