Abstract

The article reveals the psychological conditions of adaptation of children with special educational needs. The socio-psychological characteristics of children having biologically conditioned social maladaptation are revealed. The emphasis is placed on the fact that children with mental and physical disabilities should be involved into safe activities in accordance with types of their disorders for their successful adaptation. The necessity of early diagnosis of mental developmental disorders and planning of psychotherapeutic practices on its basis is substantiated. A prerequisite for working with this category is the involvement of specialists in various fields – physicians, psychologists, social workers, special education teachers, speech therapists. Namely, their dialogical interactions will promote children's adaptive abilities. We determined the types of situations crucial for adaptation of children with special educational needs: situations related to a certain type of disease or danger, determined by the nature of symptoms; situations related to the performance of any task (difficulties, failures); situations related to social interactions (with adults, peers). We outlined prospects for working with children with special educational needs to improve their adaptation: development of psychological hardiness, adequate attitude to difficult life situations, development of children’s search skills, safe environment created by harmonization of relations with the environment and used specific methods of psychological assistance.
