Abstract

The article deals with theoretical approaches to the problem of positive personality traits. It is stated that elitism is the main problem of humanistic psychology approach to the positive qualities of an individual. Humanistic psychologists distinguish a certain type of personality, endowed with certain important (from their point of view) personality traits, point out the rarity of such personality type, and the majority of people are treated as having some degree of neurotic disorder. Positive psychology approach to the healthy aspects of personality, which was used by M. Seligman and his colleagues and based on the methods of literary sources analysis, is more appropriate. They distinguished the basic virtues of personality which are valued in almost every culture. Characterizing the approach of M. Seligman, it is possible to see its certain egalitarianism, since each person, guided by the given system of coordinates, can distinguish his/her individual strengths, the presence of which is postulated in the theoretical grounds of this psychological approach. One more significant approach to the problem of positive qualities or personality traits can also be specified. A quality or a trait will be considered positive, depending on the context of activity and on the conditions of individual’s existence. The most famous classic examples are the study of temperament properties influence on the success of certain activities. In terms of situational approach to positive personality traits, it is interesting to consider the positive content of traits, generally considered psychopathological, but which can (in some circumstances) contribute to the self-realization of a personality in certain areas. It is also important to determine the positive connection of psychopathological traits of an individual with his/her strengths. But in general the physical reality behind all these approaches can be represented as a kind of integrated system of levels that helps one to realize oneself and achieve happiness.
