Abstract
The issue of monitoring the introduction of a competence-based approach to the school education in the EU countries after the adoption by Brussels of the European Reference Framework of Key Competences for Lifelong Learning in 2006 was analyzed. It is concluded that the implementation of the European Reference Framework has become an imperative for the EU. The implementation embraces the implementation of a competence-oriented educational policy, the development of competence-based educational standards and tools for assessing the acquisition of key competences by students.
