Abstract

The article outlines the conceptual background of the investigation of communication practices of self-consciousness as a factor of youth national and civic self-identification. The author defines the concept of communication practices as typical (routine, fixed) ways of communication by which an individual interprets and represents his/her experience, representations, values and norms of interaction, and which allow construction of the common meaning interaction field of the subjects of communication. The instruments and the procedure of the survey have been described and the findings of the empirical research of the communication practices of individual self-consciousness as a factor of youth civic and national self-identification have been analyzed. It has been found that civic and national identity of modern students is mainly actualized in the situations of self-presentation. The author identifies typical situations of national and civic self-identification and possible ways of communication (communication practices) in them. The criteria of classification of communication practices of civic and national self-presentation of modern Ukrainian youth are means of communication (verbal, nonverbal), content of communication, communication distance range, level of emotional prevalence in communication (rationality, emotionality), form of interactive involvement. Following the findings of the empirical research the author determines four types of communication practices of youth national and civic self-identification: 1) neutral-rational, 2) emotionally-involved, 3) nonverbal-demonstrative, 4) verbal-demonstrative and aggressive-radical. The youth aggressive-radical and verbal-active communication practices are the least frequent (acceptable). The author identifies basic constructs of youth self-consciousness which are actualized in the process of communication and determine national and civic self-identification of students.
