Abstract
The main methods of the research of self-identification process, which were de-veloped within the nomothetic and ideographic approaches, are substantiated. Expedi-ency of using qualitative methods for studying the communicative barriers of youth national and civic self-identification is grounded. The peculiarities of using the method of in-depth interviewing are described. Its procedure includes projective techniques “Free associations”, “Expert on education” and “Creative space” method. It is found that the use of associative techniques and projective techniques, as well as various visualiza-tion methods, allows us to investigate hidden barriers of national and civic self-identification, to reveal the specifics of their manifestation. According to the results of the empirical study, it is determined that the main barriers to national self-identification are content-operational barriers (aggressive patriotic propaganda, inappropriate language and cultural policies, history distortion, hostile propaganda, family education, lack of national ideas), and among barriers to civic Self-identification of young people is domi-nated by individual psychological barriers (legal nihilism, legal incompetence, moral and educational).
