Abstract
The article deals with the analysis of the basis underlying study of the myth phenomenon as a sign system. Presented and justified was the model of mechanisms of forming and translating mythological information in the culture, according to which the myth is a multistage irreversible process. The description of each stage of this process corresponds to one or another definition of «myth» that exists in the culture (mythological name, mythological image, mythological narrative), «active» within a certain stage of functioning
