In the article, the approaches to the development of the textbook on Astronomy for the profession-oriented level of the comprehensive school were suggested on the basis of the psychological and pedagogical as well as methodological concepts; it demonstrates the principles of its methodological apparatus, the organization of the academic material, its features and didactic functions. The generalized model of a textbook which demonstrates not only its inner structure but also defi nes the external elements and interrelations that are connected to the textbook is suggested. The features of the Astronomy textbook of the profession-oriented level as an open information system which is an important component of the informationeducational environment of the school astronomical education are specifi ed. The interrelationships with the other components of the textbook methodical system of the profession-oriented training of Astronomy in the high school are identified. Much attention is focused on the didactic features of a modern textbook which provide the students an opportunity to design a «one-moment» textbook in correspondence with their individual cognitive needs; such textbook is an educational product that satisfi es the educational requirements in the best way. The textbook is not considered as a source of information but, above all, as a didactic tool (the tool of the training organization and navigator), which helps a student to organize their own educational line and is a means for the teaching process design aimed at the development of the students’ key competencies and subject for a teacher. The methodical system components of an astronomy textbook that is oriented at the educational goals achievement, the methods of learning activities that motivate, orient and help the student to acquire relevant competencies are specified. Much attention is focused on the procedural component of the textbook, which must be present in all its elements and determine the nature as well as the learning process organization ensuring the widest variability and suitability for different models of textbook learning.
