Abstract

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that by mid-March, about 19.5 million people had left Ukraine as a result of the war and Russian military attacks inside the country and had crossed the border into a neighboring country. In addition, about 10.8 million people crossed the border in the opposite direction. The total number of refugees from Ukraine registered in the EU as of March 2023 is slightly more than 8.1 million. Germany adheres to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that every child has the right to access school education. If refugees from Ukraine did not register as war refugees during the first 90 days of their stay, their children have the right to go to school. Children of Ukrainian citizens who arrived in Slovakia as a result of the war and applied for temporary asylum have the right to free education in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools in Slovakia.
