Abstract
Today, the term "environmental factors" is often used in the context of the education of children with special needs, in particular, in publications that highlight new approaches to the definition of special educational needs (difficulties). Let's consider what "environmental factors" are and why it is important using the example of children with hearing impairment. Currently, in special pedagogy, it is time to abandon the "medical model of understanding educational needs", in which the main attention is focused on the diagnosis, the needs of the child are determined based mainly on the type and degree of impairment (accordingly, it is accepted that children with a diagnosis of "deafness" will have "the same needs" during school). In contrast to the "medical" model, there is a "social model of determining educational needs", which involves taking into account to a greater extent the individual characteristics of the child's development, as well as "environmental factors" that had an impact throughout the child's previous life and characterize the environment now.
