Abstract

Sociological data and conclusions of analytical materials showed that the main factors in Ukrainians’ perception of a Russian side as a perpetrator of military aggression in the Crimea and Donbas were their pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian political and ideological attitudes. There was also a moderate tendency to distinguish and differently assess the guilt of the Russian government and Russian citizens. According to the results of the all-Ukrainian psycho-semantic poll in 2021, the value preferences of four groups of the respondents were revealed and compared. These groups consisted of the respondents who blamed for the war in Donbas: the Russian government led by Putin; Russian citizens; both the government and citizens; neither one nor other. The respondents evaluated 52 statements about various aspects of their personal and socio-political life. Based on a comparison of estimates according to the Kruskal-Wallis test and factor analysis, statistically significant differences between four groups representatives’ views were found. It has been established that the respondents who were more active in accusing the Russian side – both the government and citizens, were inclined to support the Ukrainian government, had reformist attitudes, treated with restraint the internal protests, tended to external locus of control, worry about strengthening Ukrainian security, and wanted to win the war with Russia. The main difference between those who blamed the Russian government and those who blamed Russian citizens was the way to win: the former was more peaceful, while the latter were more radical. The respondents who avoided blaming the Russian side had pro-Russian, anti-reform, and protest attitudes, an internal locus of control, they did not want to support the Ukrainian government, and desired to achieve peace and quiet through concessions without security for Ukraine.
