Abstract

According to the generalized periodization of the formation and development of the national idea proposed by the Ukrainian political scientist O. Kyrichuk, the author's interpretation of the contribution of the outstanding Ukrainian thinker and scientist of European level Mykhailo Petrovych Drahomanov to the development of the Ukrainian national idea in the last third of the 19th century is substantiated. It shows his understanding of education as a factor of primary importance in the formation of national consciousness and self-identification of Ukrainians as a European nation, which has fallen into the difficult and long-term situation of a stateless nation, which, moreover, was officially forbidden to develop its own language and culture due to the fear of the imperial authorities spreading separatism. The prominent role of M. Dragomanov in opening the intellectual European elite to the richness and uniqueness of Ukrainian literature, culture, and history is emphasized.
