Abstract

An analytical review of the distribution of Bachelor’s and Master’s specialties in higher education institutions in Kyiv was carried out. Excessive proliferation of many specialties in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences has been found, leading to unjustified scattering and duplication of training, thus deconcentration and weakening of staff, research, innovative, infrastructure, organisational and financial resources, and ultimately loss of competitiveness. Instead, training in a number of relevant STEM specialties is modestly presented or non-existent, which contradicts the innovative high-tech type of human progress and, consequently, lags behind global development. Practical recommendations for improving the capital’s university network by consolidating institutions, optimising the structure of training in them using accreditation, rating, classification, and other mechanisms for assessing the quality of institutional activities. The recommendations can be used to create regional strategies for university development in Ukraine.
