Abstract

The article presents some results of an empirical study of interaction in the family as a factor in the development of civic competence of young people. The family is considered as a social system of stable interactions of its members (in particular, parents and children). Its functioning can determine development of civic competence of a child. Given the specifics of interactions between family members, family interaction environment is considered in two dimensions: first, as conducive / hindering to the development of child’s civic competence; secondly, as having its own special resources of influence on the personality of a growing citizen. The logic of constructing methodological tools for studying those aspects of interaction in the family that determine the development of civic competence of the child is presented. It involves several consecutive stages: 1) determination of psychological indicators of the study; 2) their operationalization using scales; 3) constructing judgments (empirical indicators) that comprehensively reveal the content of each scale. For the first time the author's questionnaire of features of family interaction of parents and children which determine development of child’s civic competence is designed. Methods of mathematical statistics (in particular, factor analysis) were used to process obtained empirical data. The factors that determine the development of civic competence of the individual growing in the family are identified based on the results of the empirical study. They were as follows: attitude to the child’s subjectivity (refusal of subjectivity or its support), the value of common and commonality; tools for establishing psychological boundaries; limits of responsibility of parents and children. Models of interaction in the family environment that are conducive to the development of child’s civic competence are determined. They are «authoritative», «focused on integration and involvement», «focused on partnership». Among models of interection that are not conducive to the development of child’s civic competence there are «authoritarian-directive», «focused on the needs of parents». The neutral one which can be both conducive and not conducive, depending on the extent of its application is «caring». And the characteristics of each of them are outlined.
