Abstract

The article is devoted to the formation of the personality of the Ukrainian teacher, public and educational figure, one of the organizers of the Ukrainian women’s movement Sofia Fyodorovna Rusova (1856–1940), whose name was silenced in the USSR according to political doctrine. It is stated that the extraordinary figure of S. Rusova, pedagogical views and energetic participation in the social and educational movement, work in state governing bodies during the liberation struggle of 1917–1921, fruitful emigration period caused significant interest in Ukraine at the turn of the XX and XXI centuries personalities. This contributed to the publication of the teacher's works, as well as the emergence of a large number of publications on her legacy and activities. Analysis of such publications showed that some authors, covering the biography of S. Rusova, mythologize the periods of her childhood and adolescence. In particular, one can find unfounded allegations that Sofia Fyodorovna’s mother was the daughter of a “general of the Napoleonic army”, that the village of Oleshnya was his father’s home and he worked there as a doctor, that Sofia Fyodorovna herself spoke Ukrainian since childhood, that the kindergarten opened by the Lindfors sisters, was Ukrainian, etc. Therefore, the purpose of the article was to clarify the pedigree of S. Rusova, as well as to highlight the conditions for the formation of her character, the formation of worldviews and the circumstances of the choice of life. It was found out that S. Rusova was a great-granddaughter, granddaughter and daughter of generals of the Russian army. The high level of education of parents contributed to the creation of an intellectual and aesthetic atmosphere in the family. Her father’s personal example became a decisive factor in shaping the moral qualities of the activist, while her older brother and sister influenced the formation of her political beliefs. S. Rusova’s positions on the national question were determined under the influence of members of the Kyiv Ukrainian community and, in particular, due to her feelings for her husband, Oleksandr Rusova.
