Abstract

The paper outlines the main aspects of the international experience of monitoring the progress of PIRLS reading literacy. Reading literacy has been found in research to be the ability to understand and use the forms of written language that society needs and values. The purpose of the study is updated, which is to compare the level and quality of reading and comprehension of the text by primary school students around the world, as well as to identify differences in national education systems to improve the process of learning to read. Certain changes that will take place in the PIRLS-2021 study compared to previous years are outlined. It is concluded that the analysis of PIRLS monitoring materials allows education professionals to make scientifically sound decisions on reforming the content of education. It is noted that Ukraine's participation in the international comparative study PIRLS is of great strategic importance for the development of education in our country.
