Abstract

An individual’s autonomy and relatedness to others are the basis of human self-determination and contribute to psychological well-being. Interaction with parents is especially important for children of any age, from infant to adolescent, for the successful development of autonomy and the ability to establish positive relationships with others. If parents are able to find a balance between permission to act independently and the desire to control of their child; if parents provide a space in which their child can express his/her will, even at risk; if the parents support the child's positive self-esteem; if parents try to communicate with their children "on an equal footing", it generally contribute to the development of the child's autonomy in a safe environment. It is almost generally recognized that personal autonomy is an indicator of personal maturity, a key point of personal development, and its deficiency can lead to mental disorders. In addition, personal autonomy is not an innate characteristic, it is formed in childhood and adolescence under favorable conditions of development.
