Abstract

There are a number of contradictions in the field of teaching languages and literatures of national minorities in general education institutions of Ukraine. By their nature, they can be divided into three separate groups: 1) political and legislative; 2) ideological and educational, and 3) subject-methodological. The first is the result of the adoption of a number of framework laws, which have not been extended in the form of relevant legislation to ensure the realization of the basic humanitarian and linguistic rights of national minorities. The second group is observed in cases where the general ideological and educational trends contradict the traditional culture, popular ideas and views of the majority of a particular ethnic or regional group. Subject-methodological contradictions are revealed during the conclusion and implementation of typical educational programs, when the subjects or topics of specific disciplines are very far from the real needs and aspirations of the ethnic group. This third group of contradictions is extremely important because teachers are dealing with real people (pupils or students) or their families, whose feelings may be offended by the content of allegedly neutral texts or topics. For example, when teaching modern Greek to the Greeks of Ukraine, teachers should explain why Аzov sea region Rumеіs and Urums, which have been on the territory of Ukraine for more than two and a half thousand years, are still deprived of the right to name indigenous peoples. On the other hand, their simple identification with the Greeks of the Hellenic Republic contradicts the historical truth and can lead to misunderstandings, as their native languages still exist, although very endangered and very far from Modern Greek. At the same time, the latter is not true in the cases of other Greek groups of the population of Ukraine who are descendants of emigrants of the Modern Times. Finally, the modern Greek language curricula that are being implemented today tend to avoid controversial topics rather than their analytical and full discussion. To improve the current state of affairs in school education with regard to the teaching of national minority languages, changes in the legal framework are needed, as well as a thorough correction of curricula and the content of didactic materials.
