Abstract

The article is dedicated to the relevant problem of reforming the content of general secondary education in line with national self-identification in Ukraine during the first decade of its independence in the historical and source study dimension. The historiographic understanding of this issue has shown that in the Ukrainian and foreign historiography there are no works where this topic would be considered systematically. To implement the goal of the study, using the source study approach as a leading one, documents reflecting the conceptual foundations of reforming the content of general secondary education were found and characterized (Law of Ukraine “On Education”, 1991; Concept of the secondary general education school of Ukraine, 1991; State national program “Osvita” (“Ukraine of the XXI century”), 1993; Concept of the state standard of general secondary education in Ukraine, 1996; Law of Ukraine “On general secondary education” (1999), Concept of general secondary education (a 12-year school), 2001, etc.), in order to determine their informative value. It has been substantiated that the period 1991–2002 is characterized by the development of the national educational legislation, new methodological foundations for improving the content of general secondary education and the intensification of creative pedagogical thought regarding its future development based on universal human and national values. The leading role in this process was played by the scientists of the Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine. After the analysis of the documents, it has been proven that they contain information about cardinal changes in the content of general secondary education: from the proclamation of new principles of its formation (national, democratic, humanistic, differentiation and individualization, humanitarization, child-centrism, secular, scientific, standardization, continuity, variability, etc.) to the development and concretization of them. The source study of the works by the creators (V. Kremen, O. Savchenko) of the national educational legislation made it possible to obtain the knowledge about the features of the selected materials (authors, time, circumstances, purpose of creation, factual value, reliability, representativeness, influence of the epoch). The discovered documents (laws, concepts, program, and state standard), their developers’ articles on reforming the content of general secondary education in Ukraine during the first decade of its independence are of great importance for reproducing the real picture of the process under study.
