Abstract
The content of state educational normative documents is analyzed from the point of view of developmental opportunities of junior schoolchildren by means of reading activity. Features of self-development of pupils of 3-4 classes are opened; emphasis is placed on the value-semantic aspect of reading, due to socially significant motives (attitude to knowledge as values, clearer signs of learning from the content of children's books important human and cultural values, increased interest in cognitive literature in various fields of knowledge, to "global" children's literature - popular books that are part of the active reading circle of children from around the world, etc.).
