Abstract
The publication draws attention to the insufficient attention in Ukraine to the provision of psychological and pedagogical assistance to children with mental retardation. Based on research conducted in the post-Soviet space, it is shown an increase in deviant behavior among students with mental retardation in adolescence and high school and social maladaptation and delinquency among school leavers who did not receive the necessary correctional assistance. Emphasis is placed on the relevance of psychological support for children of this category during primary school and special attention to the formation of socially valuable personality traits, adequate professional and labor self-determination.
