Abstract

An empirical factorial model of the civic consciousness of Ukrainian students has been constructed, which is consistently revealed in six components. According to the empirical research, the content and structure of the civic consciousness of student youth are reproduced, namely: active citizenship (indifference, activity, tolerance towards others, honesty, doing good deeds for the benefit of the country, having a civic position and fulfilling the duties of a citizen), signs of national identity (ethno-cultural signs, positive assessment of one's belonging to the national community, experience of involvement in the future of the country, and value of independence of the state), political values (attitude to the values of a democratic state; contradictions of civic values), unifying factors of Ukrainians (ethnicity or citizenship; external or internal threats), positive assessment of belonging to a political nation (feeling part of the people of their country, pride, evidence of emotional «accession» to the group, the importance of membership in it), civil liability (civil virtues, interpretation of the responsibility and rights of the citizen). The constructs that reveal the peculiarities of the civic consciousness of the Ukrainian students are determined empirically. They are: nominal citizenship (formally linked to the place of birth and residentce), ethnocultural attributes, positive emotional attitude to belonging to the community and the state, civic virtues and subjectity. Youth, defining themselves as a citizen, operate with a construct of a duty that is stated, but its content is not specified. At the same time, being a citizen for the students means both troubled lives and troubles. The content of civic consciousness is mostly mainly encompasses meanings associated with authorities and state, and is imbued with the negatively charged emotionally evaluative attitudes of the youth. At the same time, the meanings connected with local and civic communities as well as interaction with other citizens are hardly actualized. Based on the analysis of the empirical data, the directions of development of the civic consciousness of the students were determined: activation of the civic subjectity potential; actualization of individual meanings of civic identity and reflection of meanings of civic self-realization.
