Abstract
The essence of the concepts of "anticipation", "prediction" is substantiated; cognitive and communicative prediction functions. The problem of development of prognostic skills of younger schoolchildren in the process of perception of texts of different types and mastering the techniques of working with a children's book in domestic and foreign experience is discussed. Topical problems of prognostic reading activity of younger students are formulated, which need further elaboration.
