Abstract

The aim of the article is to consider the history of development and formation of the Ukrainian theatre lead by M. Kropyvnytskyi. The correspondence between Borys Hrinchenko and Mark Kropyvnytskyi is highlighted, namely, Hrinchenko’s sorrows concerning the destiny of the theatre and its importance for people’s education and establishment of the national identity. Methodology of the research work involves application of the methods of analysis, synthesis and generalization as well as historical and systemic approaches which enabled defining cultural codes and describing the history of formation of the Ukrainian theatre in late 19th - early 20th centuries. The scientific novelty of the research is in determining the influence of the cultural and educational process in Ukraine in late 19th - early 20th centuries on the establishment and formation of the Ukrainian theatre, its prominent actors and directors; Mark Kropyvnytskyi’s organizational activities as well as engagement of his adherents in the theatrical field (I. Karpenko-Karyi, P. Saksahanskyi, M. Starytskyi, M. Sadovskyi, M. Zankovetska) are considered and established; Borys Hrinchenko’s constitutive ideas in the dialogue with Mark Kropyvnytskyi concerning the development of the theatre in late 19th - early 20th centuries in Naddniprianska Ukraine are specified. Findings. Mark Kropyvnytskyi’s place in the formation of the Ukrainian theatre in the Ukrainian territory governed by the Russia and the circumstances under which the theatre became possible and necessary is established; the role of the theatre in education of ordinary people is considered; the epistolary-and-theatrical dialogue between Borys Hrinchenko and Mark Kropyvnytskyi is addressed; works by Ukrainian playwrights of the aforementioned period are analyzed.
