Abstract
The thesis highlights the problems of formation and assessment of reading competence in general secondary education institutions. It is concluded that one of the tasks of the modern educational process in the institutions of general secondary education on all the lessons should be the training of applicants to "read" non-textual elements, that is, to form in them the ability to find, analyze, interpret, etc. information provided by means of non-textual elements.
