Abstract

In the materials of the report, carried out by K. V. Titova at the all-Ukrainian scientific and practical seminar "Psychological help for a personality in difficult circumstances of life" on May 18, 2018 in Chernivtsi, contemporary social practices for coping with fear are considered through the prism of the notion of "Security Theater", which describes the widespread phenomenon in the security services of airports, subways, and so on. The psychological content of this social phenomenon, which consists in a number of automated actions (practices), to which people resort to help themselves to reconcile with sharp traumatic changes, information stress, crisis situation in society as a whole, is outlined. The "Security Theater" practices are based not on real effective counteraction to threats, but on the creation of "false" sensations, that help people to feel protected, although in reality there is no protection or much less than it seems. Psychologically, the defensive nature of the "Security Theater" is disclosed on the examples of five such conditionally destructive socio-psychological practices, such as: experiencing the Stockholm syndrome, escaping into a nostalgic past, pathological cravings for accumulation, participation in religious cults, alcoholization. It is also established that, although the "Security Theater" game itself becomes a source of danger, it still makes sense in some situations, because it can somewhat reduce unwarranted mass fears. The effectiveness of such spontaneous "Security Theater" practices, such as nostalgization or pathological cravings for accumulation, is rather low, and therefore there is a need to study the psychological causes of their spread.
