Abstract
The harmonization of the existing psychological discourse concerning family myth in the psychology of the family is made in the article on the basis of the analysis of scientific sources and literature. It is specified that the term “family myth” was introduced into scientific circulation by A. Farreyr in 1963 in his work “Family Myth and Homeostasis”. The ideas of family myths in the theoretical approaches whose representatives concentrated focus on the individual level of family functioning (psychoanalytic (K. Jung, G. Dix) and cognitive (A. Ellis)) and in those theoretical approaches, within which the family is analyzed as a complete system (transheneration (M. Bowen, J. Boshormeny-Nad) experiential or experience-based (V. Satire, C. Whitaker) and strategic (M. Selvini Palazzoli, L. Boscolo, G. Cecchin, G. Prata)) are studied. The specifics of ideas in the narrative psychology about myths about family formation is shown. It is determined that in the narrative psychology (M. White and L. Hoffman) the emergence of family myths is associated with the pressure of society and culture that make family to restrict ideas about themselves and the world by the certain limits. Such a position differs from the concepts developed in psychoanalysis, cognitive, transheneration, experiental and strategic approach, according to which the formation of myths is associated mainly with the paternal family. It is defined that most of the researchers agree that the family myth is a kind of family defense mechanism which is formed by a family. Performing constructive functions in the first generation, it evolves into destructive mechanism in the next generations of the family. It is determined that along with theories of pathological role of family myths the concepts of neutral, universal or even positive values (D. Baharozzi and S. Anderson), which, in our opinion, needs further study, are being developed.
