Abstract

The concept of the author’s master-class is analyzing the dilemma of using the playback theatre in dealing with traumatic stories, namely: the need to work out "conserved" obsessive traumatic memories and emotional states vs undesirability in the conditions of the playback theatre to play stories about situations in which a psychological trauma was received, in particular, flashbacks, due to the risk of retraumatization of the individual and the group. To prevent such a risk and increase the psycho-rehabilitation potential of the playback theatre, it is proposed: a) to significantly emphasize the psychological resources of life creation (viability), that can spontaneously arise in the stories of the past that the audience tells; b) provide two basic conditions from the neurobiological point of view: 1) before diving into difficult situations, it is necessary to update and consolidate the situation "here and now" – with its resources and, most importantly, the sensation of reality; 2) to provide a powerful neural-associative connection of this situation with the situation "there and then", which will allow the neurobiological mechanism of "combination of associations" to oppose the mechanism of "fixation through repetition", as a result of which the brain will send inhibitory impulses to memory neurons about pathological events and will promote "reflashing" of established neural connections; c) be prepared, if necessary, for the purposeful psychotherapeutic support of the tellers and spectators: to expand the feedback in the post-interview; to play again (updating) some actual negative emotions; to formulate carefully the red thread (the dynamics of meanings) of different stories; to make an additional sharing and proper discussion at the end of the playback performance; to make some individual psychotherapeutic interventions after the action with those, who especially need it.
