Abstract

Modern society is characterized by complex socio-economic and political transformations on a global scale, associated with the processes of globalization. One of the features of the current wave of globalization is intercultural interaction, which, in turn, has led to the emergence of multicultural education. Multicultural education is a relatively new branch of pedagogical theory and practice. It is believed that its appearance is associated with a period of complex socio-cultural changes in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. However, the American scientist J. Banks argues that multicultural education has deep historical roots associated with the African-American movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Analyzing the history of multicultural education and the stages of its formation, presented in the works of J. Banks (J. Banks) and C. Grant (C. Grant), we see that this process is associated mainly with migration, and also emerged as one of ways to combat racism. Over time, the essence of multicultural education has been transformed, the realization has come that it must meet the needs of not only different races, but also other groups in society. It also became clear that the introduction of multicultural education in practice is not possible without quality professional training of teachers who are able to work in a multicultural society. According to A. Thomas, modern multicultural education is possible when a person seeks in communication with people of another culture to understand their specific system of values and actions, perception, cognition, thinking, ready to integrate new experiences into their own cultural system and apply to the inocultural field. Today, the theory and practice of multicultural education in the United States continues to develop. Demand is the study of leading American scholars and educators in the field of multicultural education: J. Banks (J. Banks), K. Grant (C. Grant), S. Nieto (S. Nieto), K. Sleeter (C. Sleeter), etc. .
