Abstract

This article is devoted to the analysis of the competence-oriented foreign language teaching, which is one of the most important means for the modernization of school education as a whole and particularly primary school. The implementation of new approaches in teaching foreign languages in primary school is a requirement of the new government standards in the sphere of primary education. It helps to reach the main aim of teaching foreign languages which is the formation of a secondary language person ready to communicate in the multicultural world. The author reveals the main points of the competence-based approach in language education and gives its definition. The analysis of the didactic and modern educational materials helped to determine the differences between two key terms «competence» and «competency». The goals and objectives of competence-oriented foreign language teaching to younger schoolchildren are characterized. The basic approaches to the construction of competence-oriented foreign language teaching at primary school are distinguished. In the author’s opinion, the aims, tasks and principles, analyzed in this article, are conceptual basis for constructing content of foreign language teaching at primary school on the principles of competence-based approach. Considerable attention is paid to description of didactics and methodical principles for teaching foreign languages on the first stage of secondary education. A detailed analysis is made of such principles of teaching as: principle of communicative orientation, principle of oral approach, principle of integrated development of communication skills, principle of development studies, principle of availability and feasibility, native language principle, principle of sociocultural orientation, principle of dialogue of cultures. During studies at primary school pupils need to master some groups of competences in addition to forming foreign language communicative competence (linguistic, speech, socio-cultural and general learnt), which are oriented to their personality-social and intellectual development.
