Abstract
The research offers the results of the analysis of changes in the content, effectiveness and influence of the educational ideal of the Ukrainian elite from Kievan Rus to the stateless status within the legal field of the Russian Empire. Attention is focused on the problems of legitimacy of Ukrainian elite within the Lithuanian, Polish and Russian legislative field. The reasons and consequences of changes in the ideological value guidelines of Ukrainian gentry, the delegitimization of traditional Ukrainian elite and its separation from the interests of their own people were characterized. The features of identifying the real leaders who have appeared in the most difficult times of life of Ukrainian society instead of the formal elite which was moving away from the people were characterized.
